Training for New Industry
One of the largest
and most prominent training companies in the world needed a customized
version of one of its packaged customer service training programs
prepared for doctors in large regional hospitals. This was a new
market group, and this training vendor wanted to ensure that the
training would appeal to that target audience and would hold their
attention in short segments as their schedules would allow.
was contracted to customize the training program and materials
for this very busy audience. We conducted several focus groups
with doctors and with hospital administration and then developed
an innovative approach complete with video and skill practices
with typical patient scenarios. Humor was used to engage the doctors
in changing their behaviors with patients and their families.
The end product was 35-minute intact training segments on 24 different
topics and skills that could easily be delivered over time to
small groups of doctors by a certified member of the Human Resources
function in the hospital.
was able to prepare this new product very quickly for this vendor
to offer its major prospects in the hospital market. The results
were significant, with 75% of the hospitals approached purchasing
the training for their medical staffs. The feedback from the doctors
who participated in the program was very positive. Six months
later the administrators of the hospitals using the training were
surveyed for their opinion on its effectiveness. They all said
that patient and family complaints about the bedside manner of
their doctors had dropped by at least 50%.
